3D Printing for Woodworkers, a Craftsman Shop Tour, and Big Toy Build Prep

Vol 36, Issue #10 October 2026

Can a 3D printer earn a spot in a woodshop? Calvin Sov and Marc Collins made the case, covering how FDM printers work, what to look for when buying one, and how to go from a SketchUp design to printed jigs, including the ones Luke and Marc built for the toy program’s treasure chests. David Feinner reports on the September shop tour at Gordon Smoire’s home, where nearly every room shows off his Craftsman and Sam Maloof inspired furniture, trim and built-ins. Eitan shares how an early chessboard build day helped work out the kinks before the Big Toy Build at El Camino Real Charter High School on October 17 and 18, and invites members to get involved in club leadership ahead of November elections. The minutes report 64 paid members, a limited-space Master Craftsman Tour at the Sam Maloof House, and a new challenge to bring in a jig or fixture of your own design. Rounding things out: Bob Bilyeu’s favorite hardware for building jigs, Show and Tell, Rich Benson’s latest maple and fire-salvaged deodar cedar for sale, and new tips, videos and reviews from the web.
